In the first quarter of 2024, Kenya experienced a staggering 86.2% surge in the import of second-hand clothing from China, commonly referred to as ‘mitumba’.

‘Mitumba’, beloved for its affordability, is the cornerstone of Kenya’s clothing market. Chinese exports to Kenya during this period reached 31,594 tonnes, valued at $22.732 million (Ksh 3.03 billion), marking a substantial increase compared to the same period in 2023.

This surge underscores the growing demand for affordable clothing options, particularly among low- and middle-income earners. The ‘mitumba trade’, supporting approximately two million workers, thrives in bustling markets and shopping hubs across the country.

Despite its economic significance, the thriving second-hand clothing market poses environmental challenges. Unsold or unusable garments contribute to landfill overflow and environmental degradation, compounded by the health risks of textile burning.

While Kenya heavily relies on imported second-hand clothing, its domestic textile industry struggles to keep pace. Only 15 out of 52 textile mills are operational, operating at a mere 45% capacity due to various factors including outdated technology and high operating costs.

Moreover, the sustainability of the ‘mitumba trade’ faces threats from exporting countries proposing strict restrictions on second-hand garment exports to developing nations, citing environmental concerns.
