In a significant display of military tradition and national pride, President William Ruto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, presided over the Trooping of the Colour ceremony for the newly formed 25 Mechanised Infantry Battalion (25MIB). This marked the second time of such event during his tenure.

The prestigious ceremony unfolded at Uhuru Gardens, the very ground where the nation celebrated Jamhuri Day. The 25MIB, an integral part of the Kenya Army’s 8th Mechanised Infantry Brigade, received heightened attention as President Ruto oversaw a momentous transition for the Eight Infantry Brigade. The 25MIB now stands to benefit from enhanced support, including mechanized capabilities such as the deployment of Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicles.

Established on July 19, 2017, alongside sister units 23MIB and 27MIB, the 25MIB initially lacked posted personnel until July 2018. The focus shifted towards the establishment and consolidation of personnel, culminating in the operationalization of the Battalion on September 29, 2019. Since then, the unit has actively participated in various military events and duties, showcasing its readiness for national defense and support to civil authority.

President Ruto, in a departure from his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta’s practice, refrained from donning military attire during the handover of the regimental colours – a practice deeply rooted in tradition. These colours, a symbol of the highest honor for any military unit, were entrusted to the 25MIB by President Ruto. The loss of these colours would signify the disbandment of the unit, underscoring their significance and the vigilance with which they are safeguarded.

The “Trooping the Colours” ceremony, dating back to 17th century England, holds historical importance. The colours, now embodying the spirit of the regiment, showcase battle honours and badges commemorating the gallant deeds of its troops. Since independence, these colours have replaced those of the Queen, symbolizing Kenya’s sovereignty.

In his role as the Commander-in-Chief, President Ruto’s leadership during the trooping ceremony emphasized the unit’s mission readiness, defending the nation’s territorial integrity, and aiding civil authority when needed. The ceremony, echoing the country’s rich military history, was a proud moment for the 25MIB and a testament to the dedication of Kenya’s armed forces.

As the 25MIB joins the lineage of esteemed units like the Kenya Rifles, the Trooping of Colours remains a timeless tradition, a symbol of military prowess, and a reflection of the nation’s commitment to security and defense.
